Georges Cuvier
Georges Cuvier was a famous French scientist who loved studying animals and fossils. He was born in Montbéliard and grew up learning many things about nature. From a young age, he read books about animals and learned a lot!
Cuvier became very important for studying how animals’ bodies work and comparing them to each other. He looked at bones from long-ago animals and found that some no longer exist today. One of his big discoveries was a huge skeleton from Argentina, which he named the Megatherium, a giant prehistoric ground sloth.
People know Cuvier for helping to start the science of paleontology, which is the study of old animal bones. He also worked with rocks and layers of Earth to understand its history. His ideas helped scientists learn more about how Earth changed over time.
Cuvier’s work is still remembered today. Even the Eiffel Tower in Paris has his name on it! He taught many students and wrote important books about animals and nature. Many animals are named after him, like Cuvier’s beaked whale and Cuvier’s gazelle.
