Great Mosque of Kairouan
The Great Mosque of Kairouan is a very old and special mosque in the town of Kairouan in Tunisia. It is part of North Africa. People think it is one of the most important Islamic buildings there. It has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A wise Arab leader named Uqba ibn Nafi built the mosque a long time ago, in the year 670. It was built when the city of Kairouan was first created. The mosque is very big and has many beautiful parts. It was the first place to use a special kind of arch called the horseshoe arch in Islamic buildings.
The mosque has a large place for prayer and a big open space called a courtyard. It also has a tall tower called a minaret. Inside, there are many columns that hold up the roof. The mosque is very important for learning, too. For many years, it was like a school where people studied many subjects.
The Great Mosque of Kairouan is loved for its beautiful design and its history. It shows us how people built and learned many years ago.
