The Name Havana
The name Havana has an interesting story. In 1514, a man named Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar started a town called San Cristóbal de la Habana, meaning 'Saint Christopher' of the Habana. Some think the name comes from Habaguanex, a leader of a local Taíno group. When people in England spoke the name, the “b” changed to a “v”. So, the city became known as Havana.
