Hernán Cortés

Hernán Cortés was a Spanish explorer and leader who lived a long time ago. He was born around 1485 in Medellín, Spain. As a young man, he wanted to see new places and find adventure, so he traveled to the New World.

Cortés is best known for leading a group of people to Mexico. He met with many local groups and worked with a woman named Doña Marina, who helped translate for him. His journey changed the history of Mexico forever.

Cortés came from a family of lesser nobility. He studied in Salamanca and later worked in Hispaniola and Cuba. In 1519, he began his big adventure to mainland Mexico. He was very clever and made friends with some native people who did not like the powerful Aztec rulers.

After many challenges, Cortés helped end the rule of the Aztec Empire. For his success, he was given an important title by the king of Spain. He returned to Spain in 1541 and passed away there six years later.

Today, people remember Cortés for his big journeys and the changes he brought to Mexico. Some places and stories still carry his name, showing how his life made a big mark in history.
