The High Middle Ages

During this time, many new things happened. The Vikings settled in places like the British Isles and France. The Magyars stopped moving and formed the Kingdom of Hungary. The Byzantine Empire faced challenges but was still important.
People cleared forests and marshes to create new farmland. The Catholic Church was very powerful. It called for Crusades to the Holy Land. New artistic and intellectual ideas grew, and many famous Gothic cathedrals were built. This was a time of great growth and change in Europe.

Big changes happened in towns and learning. New towns grew because there was more food from farming. Universities opened in Bologna, Oxford, and Paris. These schools taught many subjects and helped people learn new ideas.
Kings and Countries
Kings and countries also changed. In England, new rulers from France came after a big battle in 1066. Scotland and Wales had to follow English rules for a time. In France and Germany, old empires split into new kingdoms. Hungary grew strong under leaders like Saint Stephen I.
Building Beautiful Buildings
People built many beautiful buildings. Gothic cathedrals with tall towers and colorful glass windows were popular. These churches looked like they were reaching up toward the sky. Famous examples include the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris.
Stories and Music
Stories and music were also important. Tales about Charlemagne and King Arthur were told. Poets in southern France wrote songs about love. Most music was for churches, using special symbols to write it down. Later, new styles like organum and motet were created.
