What is Hockey?

Hockey is a fun sport where teams use sticks to hit a ball or a small, hard disk called a puck into the other team's goal. There are many kinds of hockey! Some are played on grass, some on ice, and others indoors.

Players use sticks to move the ball or puck. Most hockey games use a puck, but some use a ball or a special puck with a hole in the middle. People have been playing games like hockey for thousands of years. One person who helped create modern hockey was Sam Jacks from Canada.

Hockey can be played with or without skates. Ice hockey needs ice skates, but field hockey is played on grass or turf without skates. Other types include roller hockey and rink hockey. Even though games like lacrosse, hurling, and shinty also use sticks, they are not usually called hockey.

Different Kinds of Hockey

Hockey comes in many flavors! Here are a few popular ones:

  • Field Hockey: Played on grass with a small, hard ball. It is popular in many countries, including Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina. Both boys and girls play, often in teams of just one gender.

  • Ice Hockey: Played on ice with a puck. It is very popular in Canada, Finland, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. It is the national winter sport of Canada and a popular national sport of Latvia.

  • Roller Hockey: Played on a dry surface with roller skates. There are two main types: one with inline skates and another with four-wheeled skates.

Why Do People Love Hockey?

Hockey is exciting and fun! It teaches teamwork and quick thinking. People around the world enjoy watching and playing different kinds of hockey. Whether on grass, ice, or a special floor, hockey brings friends together to have a great time!

Hockey has been played for a very long time. Ancient pictures in Egypt show people using sticks and balls. In Ireland, a game called hurling has been played since before 1272 BC. In Ancient Greece, a similar game was called kerētízein. Even in Inner Mongolia, the Daur people have enjoyed a hockey-like game for about 1,000 years.

Fun Facts About Hockey

  • The word "hockey" was first seen in 1773 in a book called Juvenile Sports and Pastimes by Richard Johnson. No one knows exactly where the word came from.
  • One idea is that it comes from a Middle French word for a shepherd's staff because the ends of hockey sticks look like these staffs.
  • Another idea is that it comes from a type of alcohol called “hock.” People used barrels with stoppers from this alcohol as balls in early games.

Hockey is a wonderful sport enjoyed by many, and it continues to grow and change in exciting ways!
