What is iTunes?

iTunes was a special program made by Apple to help people play and organize music, videos, podcasts, e-books, and mobile apps on their computers. It was like a friendly helper that kept everything in order.

A Helpful Friend from Apple

Apple’s leader, Steve Jobs, introduced iTunes in 2001. It became very popular because it made managing music easy and fun. Later, Apple added a place called the iTunes Store where people could buy and download music. iTunes also helped people set up and manage their iPod, iPhone, and other Apple devices.

Changing Times

Over time, some people felt iTunes was getting too big. In 2019, Apple decided to make things simpler. They replaced iTunes on newer Mac computers with separate apps like Music, Podcasts, and TV. On Windows computers, most iTunes features moved to other apps by 2024. But iTunes is still used for podcasts and audiobooks on some computers. Older versions of Macs and some Windows users can still use the original iTunes if they like.

Fun Facts About iTunes

  • iTunes started as a program called SoundJam MP, which Apple bought in 1999.
  • It could burn CDs and made it easy to manage music libraries.
  • iTunes came to Windows computers in 2003, helping people all over the world enjoy their music.
