Welcome to Idaho!
Idaho is a beautiful state in the Western United States. It is bordered by Montana and Wyoming to the east, Nevada and Utah to the south, and Washington and Oregon to the west. In the north, Idaho shares a small border with the Canadian province of British Columbia. The capital and largest city is Boise.
Idaho is the 14th-largest state by land area, covering 83,569 square miles. For thousands of years, many native peoples lived there. In the early 1800s, the area was called the Oregon Country, a region both the U.S. and the British Empire wanted. Idaho became a U.S. territory in 1846 and was organized as its own territory in 1863. It joined the United States as the 43rd state on July 3, 1890.
Beautiful Landscapes
Idaho has many different landscapes. In the north, called the Idaho Panhandle, you can find snowy mountains. In the south, there is the flat Snake River Plain. About 38% of the land is managed by the United States Forest Service, meaning lots of forests and outdoor fun!
Famous for Potatoes
Idaho is very famous for its potatoes. These potatoes grow very well there because of the rich soil and perfect climate. You might see signs saying “Idaho Potatoes” in grocery stores all over the country. Besides potatoes, Idaho is also good at farming, mining, and welcoming tourists who love nature.
