Junípero Serra
Junípero Serra was a kind and caring priest from long ago. He was born in a small village called Petra on the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. As a boy, he loved learning and helping others in his community.
Serra grew up to join the Franciscan Order, a group of people who help others. He studied hard and became a priest. Later, he traveled to places far away to help people learn about his faith and live together.
Serra is best known for creating many missions along the beautiful coast of California. He started with missions in Baja California and then moved north to Alta California. He helped build places like Mission San Diego de Alcalá and Mission San Carlos Borromeo. His work brought many people together and taught them new skills.
In 2015, Pope Francis made Serra a saint during a visit to the United States. People remember him for his dedication and the many missions he helped create. Today, you can still see places named after him, like streets and schools in California.
Serra’s story shows how one person can make a big difference by helping others and building strong communities.
