Welcome to New Mexico!

New Mexico is a beautiful state in the Southwestern part of the United States. It is part of the Mountain States and sits in the southern Rocky Mountains. It shares a special area called the Four Corners with Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. It also touches Texas, Oklahoma, and even meets a border with Mexico!

Big Cities and Special Places

The biggest city in New Mexico is Albuquerque. But a very special city is Santa Fe, the state capital. Santa Fe is one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded way back in 1610!

New Mexico is the fifth-largest of the fifty states, but it doesn’t have many people living there. The land changes a lot, from forests in the mountains to dry deserts, with a big river called the Rio Grande running through the middle.

Rich History and Culture

For thousands of years, many different cultures have lived in New Mexico. Today, the state is famous for mixing many traditions together. You can see this mix in the food, music, and buildings. The people here come from many backgrounds, including Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and American roots.

Fun Facts About New Mexico

  • Name Origin: New Mexico got its name long before the country of Mexico existed. Spanish explorers named it Nuevo México hoping to find riches, and the name stuck!
  • Landscapes: New Mexico has very different landscapes. You can find snowy mountains, green forests, wide deserts, and grassy plains all in one state!
  • Special Food: New Mexico is famous for its tasty food, especially dishes made with red and green chile peppers. Try a breakfast burrito or a bowl of green chile stew sometime!
