Montreal is a big and beautiful city in Canada. It is the largest city in Quebec and the second-largest in all of Canada. Montreal is a special place where many people from different places live together.
A City with a Rich History
Montreal was founded in 1642. It was first called Ville-Marie, which means "City of Mary" in French. The city is named after Mount Royal, a mountain with three peaks right in the middle of the city. Montreal sits on the Island of Montreal, which is surrounded by water. The city is about 122 miles east of Ottawa, the country’s capital, and 160 miles southwest of Quebec City.
A Place of Two Languages
In Montreal, most people speak French. It is the city's official language, and many signs and shops use French. But English is also very common, and many people in Montreal can speak both languages. This makes Montreal one of the most bilingual cities in Canada. You will hear French spoken in schools, government offices, and even on street signs.
