Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa. It stands tall about 150 km north-northeast of Nairobi. The mountain has three main peaks: Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana.
People have lived around Mount Kenya for many years. The Kikuyu people call it Kĩrĩnyaga, meaning "the one with the ostrich," because the snow looks like an ostrich’s tail. Other groups, like the Maasai, have their own special names for the mountain.
In 1949, the area became Mount Kenya National Park. Later, in 1997, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its beautiful nature and important plants and animals.
Mount Kenya is a big volcano that formed a very long time ago. It used to have an ice cap, and today there are still small glaciers there. These glaciers are getting smaller every year. The forests around the mountain give water to many people in Kenya.
Mount Kenya is a wonderful place to visit. People come from all over to see its beautiful scenery and to climb its peaks. The park is full of interesting plants and animals, making it a special place for everyone to enjoy.
