What Is a National Anthem?
A national anthem is a special song that represents a country or a nation. It helps people feel proud of where they come from. Most national anthems sound like marches or hymns, which are types of music used for celebrations and important events.
Some big countries have special songs for each part of them. For example, the United Kingdom has its own songs for the areas inside it. Even though these areas are not independent countries, their songs are sometimes called national anthems too.
Fun History Facts
Long ago, some kings in Europe had special songs to honor their rule. One famous song is "God Save the King/Queen", first sung in 1619. It is still used today in the United Kingdom and other countries that share the same king or queen.
France made history in 1795 when it became the first country to choose an official national anthem, called "La Marseillaise". Many countries later chose their own anthems, especially when they became new nations or gained independence.
Where and When We Hear Them
National anthems are used in many happy moments. You might hear them on national holidays, at sports events, or even at the start or end of school days. They are often played when a team wins a gold medal at the Olympic Games or before games begin. Some places play the anthem when radio or television stations start or end their day.
