New Year's Day

New Year's Day is the first day of the year. It happens on January 1 in most places. People all over the world celebrate this special day in many fun ways.

Many cultures have their own way to welcome the new year. Some celebrate it in winter, while others mark it in spring or summer. Long ago, people in Rome honored a god named Janus on this day. That is why the month of January is named after him.

Today, almost every country uses the same calendar to know the date. People often celebrate by watching fireworks at midnight on New Year's Eve. They also make promises called resolutions for the new year and call family and friends to share the happy moment.

In many places, New Year's Day is a holiday. People might watch parades, like the one in London, or enjoy special concerts. Some even take a "polar bear plunge" by jumping into cold water for fun. It is a day full of joy and new beginnings for everyone.
