Nuuk

Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland. It is also the biggest city in Greenland. Nuuk is very special because it is the northernmost capital city in the world! That means it is the farthest north of all the capital cities.

Nuuk was started in 1728 by a man named Hans Egede. He was a missionary from Denmark. He called the new place Godthåb, which means “good hope” in Danish. But today, people call it Nuuk, which means “cape” in Greenlandic.

Nuuk sits at the end of a long fjord called Nuup Kangerlua. It is on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. The city is near many mountains and islands. One famous mountain close to Nuuk is Sermitsiaq. It is 1,210 meters tall and you can see it from many places in the city.

Life in Nuuk

Nuuk is home to many people. In January 2025, about 20,113 people lived there. That is more than a third of all the people in Greenland! Even though Nuuk is small, it is very important. All the main government buildings are there. Nuuk is also a place where people can learn and work. There is a university called the University of Greenland where students study many things like languages, journalism, and more.

Fun Things to See

Nuuk has many interesting places to visit. One is Hans Egede's House. It is Greenland’s oldest building and was built in 1721. Another place is the Nuuk Cathedral. It is a red building with a clock tower and was built in 1849. People also love to visit the Greenland National Museum. It has special old items, including the Qilakitsoq mummies.

There is also a place called Katuaq. It is a cultural center where you can watch concerts, see art, or watch films. Nuuk even has its own art museum! It is called the Nuuk Art Museum and has beautiful paintings, drawings, and carvings.

Sports and Games

Nuuk is good at sports! There are many sports clubs in the city. People love to play football, and Nuuk has a big stadium called Nuuk Stadium. It can hold up to 2,000 people. There is also a place for handball games called Godthåbhallen. In the winter, people like to ski on a hill called Lille Malene. And guess what? Nuuk has the world’s only arctic golf course!
