What is Orange?

Orange is a bright and happy colour. It sits between yellow and red. When light has a special mix, it looks orange to our eyes. We name this colour after the orange fruit.

Orange in Nature

Many fruits and vegetables are orange because of special things called carotenes. Carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and oranges all show this colour. In autumn, leaves often turn orange when the green fades away.

Orange in Culture

People think orange means fun, warmth, and energy. It is linked to autumn and holidays. In the Netherlands, orange is very important. Some Buddhist monks in Laos wear orange as a sacred colour. Orange helps us see things easily, so it is used for safety items like lifeboats.
