The Philadelphia Zoo is a wonderful place where you can see many amazing animals! It is located in the Centennial District of Philadelphia on the west bank of the Schuylkill River. This special zoo is important because it was the first true zoo in the whole United States!

The zoo opened its doors on July 1, 1874, and it had 1,000 animals. Today, the Philadelphia Zoo cares for nearly 1,300 animals, many of which are rare and need special help. The zoo works with many groups to protect the natural homes of animals all around the world.

Visitors to the Philadelphia Zoo can have lots of fun! There is a special area for children called a petting zoo where kids can touch and play with small animals. There is also a colorful carousel with a rainforest theme, chances to talk with animal keepers, and many exhibits where families can learn more about the animals. The zoo even has a fun place called Zoo360 where animals can move along special paths above and around visitors!
