Portsmouth is a busy city in England. It is special because it is mostly on an island called Portsea Island, making it the only city in the United Kingdom not mainly on the mainland.

The city has a long history. People have lived there since Roman times. Portsmouth became a town in the year 1194 and grew because of its important port and navy. Today, Portsmouth has over 208,000 people, making it one of the crowded cities in the United Kingdom.

Portsmouth is famous for its tall Spinnaker Tower, which is 560 feet tall and has great views. The city also has two cathedrals: the Anglican Cathedral of St Thomas and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Evangelist.

People love to visit Portsmouth’s seaside area called Southsea. There, you can find fun places like Clarence Pier and walk along beautiful piers. The city also has a big navy base and many ships to see.

Portsmouth is home to famous people like author Charles Dickens, who wrote wonderful stories. The city has many places to explore, such as old forts, museums, and special events all year round.

Portsmouth has strong links with other cities around the world, including Caen in France and Sydney in Australia. People from different places visit Portsmouth to enjoy its history, views, and friendly atmosphere.
