The President of Italy

The President of Italy is an important person who helps keep Italy united. This special job makes sure the country's rules are followed. The president is like the head of the country and works to keep everything calm and fair.

The president stays in the job for seven years. Sometimes, a president can stay longer if needed. Right now, the president is Sergio Mattarella. He started in 2015 and was asked to stay again in 2022.

The president lives in a grand palace called the Quirinal Palace in Rome. This palace is guarded by special helpers called the Carabinieri. The president also has other homes near Rome and in Naples.

People choose the president in a special way. A group of leaders from Italy’s parliament and regions vote for the new president. This voting is secret and can take many rounds. The president helps Italy stay friendly with other countries and supports fair laws.
