The Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains, often called the Rockies, are a big group of tall mountains in North America. They stretch for almost 3,000 miles from Canada all the way down to New Mexico in the United States. These mountains are very special and are the biggest mountain system in North America.
The Rocky Mountains began forming a very long time ago when pieces of the Earth’s surface moved. Over millions of years, glaciers and other forces shaped the tall peaks and pretty valleys we see today. Today, many of the highest peaks are in Colorado, where the land is very high above sea level.
People love to visit the Rocky Mountains for many fun activities. You can go hiking, camping, skiing, and fishing in places like Rocky Mountain National Park in the United States and Banff National Park in Canada. These parks help protect the beautiful mountains and the animals that live there, such as wolves, elk, and mountain goats.
The Rocky Mountains have many different climates and plants because they cover such a large area. From cold, snowy peaks to warmer valleys, the mountains are home to many kinds of wildlife. People have lived in these mountains for thousands of years, and today they are a popular place for adventure and beauty.
