What was the Second Sino-Japanese War?

The Second Sino-Japanese War was a long and hard fight between China and Japan. It started in 1937 and ended in 1945. Many people were hurt, and it was a very sad time.

Why did it happen?

Japan wanted more land and resources. They invaded parts of China, starting with an area called Manchuria in 1931. The big fight began in 1937 after an event called the Marco Polo Bridge Incident near Beijing.

How did it affect China?

China was already struggling with inner problems and had weak leaders. The war made things much harder. Many cities, like Shanghai and Nanjing, were attacked. People had to leave their homes and live far away.

Who helped China?

China got help from friends:

  • The Soviet Union sent planes, tanks, and advisors from 1937 to 1941.
  • The United States joined after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. They sent pilots called the Flying Tigers and later more help.
  • Britain also helped with supplies and information.

How did the war end?

Japan finally gave up in 1945 after the Allies won in the Pacific. The war left China very weak, and soon after, fighting started again between different groups in China. This led to the Communists taking control in 1949.

Remembering the war

China still remembers this sad time every year on September 3. People honor those who fought and suffered. The war also affects how Japan and China get along today. Some in Japan still argue about what happened, which makes relations difficult.

Fun facts

  • The war lasted almost eight years.
  • Many brave Chinese soldiers fought hard even with little equipment.
  • Cities like Shanghai and Nanjing were major battlegrounds.
  • After the war, Taiwan came under the control of the Republic of China government.
