Sodium Hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide is a special kind of chemical. It is also called caustic soda or lye. It looks like a white solid and comes from sodium and hydroxide ions.
It mixes well with water and can absorb things like moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. In schools, it is often used to show how acids and bases work, especially with hydrochloric acid and neutral water.
People use sodium hydroxide to make many everyday things. It helps create paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps, detergents, and even drain cleaners. It is very important in many different places.
Sodium hydroxide feels slippery because it turns skin oils into soap-like substances. When it dissolves in water, it makes the water feel warm. It is usually clear and has no smell. It is used in many factories and labs, but it must be handled carefully.
People have used sodium hydroxide for a very long time. It was first made by mixing special plant ashes with water. Today, it is made in factories using different methods. It is very useful but needs to be stored in special containers to keep it safe.
