The Treaty of Chaguaramas

The Treaty of Chaguaramas is an important agreement that helped countries in the Caribbean work together. It was signed on July 4, 1973, in Chaguaramas, a place in Trinidad and Tobago. The countries that signed it were Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.

This treaty created the Caribbean Community and Common Market, also called CARICOM. It helped these countries trade with each other and support each other in many ways. The treaty made it easier for people, goods, and ideas to move between the countries.

In 2001, the countries signed a new version of the treaty to keep working together even better. Some countries, like Guyana, celebrate CARICOM Day in July to remember this special agreement. In Cuba, they have a day called CARICOM-Cuba Day to honor their friendship with CARICOM.
