The United States Men's National Soccer Team

The United States men's national soccer team, often called the USMNT, represents the United States in international soccer. The team is managed by the United States Soccer Federation and has been part of FIFA since 1914. They also belong to CONCACAF, the soccer group for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The USMNT has participated in the FIFA World Cup twelve times. Their best performance was finishing third in 1930, hosted in Uruguay. They have also reached the quarter-finals in 2002 and the round of 16 in four other World Cups. In 2026, the United States will host the World Cup for the second time, making it a very exciting year for soccer fans in the country.

In CONCACAF competitions, the United States has been very successful. They have won ten major titles, including seven CONCACAF Gold Cup titles and three CONCACAF Nations League titles. The team has also played in the Copa América five times, finishing fourth twice.

Early History

The first United States national soccer team played its first match on November 28, 1885, against Canada. Canada won 1–0, but later the U.S. won a match against Canada 1–0, though neither match was official. The U.S. earned medals in the men's tournament at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis.

The U.S. played its first official international match in 1916, defeating Sweden 3–2. The team played in the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930. They beat Belgium 3–0 and Paraguay 3–0. In the semifinals, the U.S. lost to Argentina and did not play for third place.

Recent Success

In recent years, the USMNT has continued to grow stronger. They won the CONCACAF Nations League in 2021 and the Gold Cup later that year. The United States also qualified for the 2022 World Cup and advanced to the knockout stage. With the 2026 World Cup being hosted by the United States, there is even more excitement for the future of American soccer.

The USMNT plays in many different stadiums across the country, with Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C., hosting the most games. The team has many fans, with groups like Sam's Army and The American Outlaws showing their support at matches.
