Vostok 1
Vostok 1 was the very first spaceflight with a person on it. It happened on April 12, 1961. A brave cosmonaut named Yuri Gagarin was the person who traveled around Earth in space. He became the first human to go all the way around our planet in space.
The flight went up very high—about 327 kilometers above Earth. It only took 108 minutes to go up and come back down. After the spaceship flew high enough, Yuri came down safely with a parachute. He landed separately from the spaceship near a place called Engels in the Saratov region.
Vostok 1 was part of a big space project called the Vostok programme. There was a big competition called the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War. Both countries wanted to be the first to send a person into space. The Soviet Union worked on the Vostok programme, while the United States worked on Project Mercury.
Yuri Gagarin was chosen to be the main pilot of Vostok 1. Before the flight, he and another cosmonaut, Gherman Titov, relaxed by listening to music and talking about their childhoods. Doctors watched them to make sure they were okay. Yuri Gagarin was very proud to be the first person to travel into space. He knew it was a big adventure for all of humanity.
After the flight, the whole world celebrated Yuri Gagarin’s achievement. The Soviet Union had big celebrations in Moscow and other cities. April 12 is now a special day to remember human space travel. The capsule from Vostok 1 is kept in a museum, and there is a tall monument where Yuri Gagarin landed. His flight will always be remembered as a major milestone in space exploration.
