The Vostok Programme

The Vostok programme was a special project by the Soviet Union to send people into space. They wanted to be the first to do this and compete with the United States.

The most famous moment was when Yuri Gagarin became the first person to travel into space. He flew in a spacecraft called Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961. His trip around Earth lasted just over one hour, and he came back safely.

The Vostok spacecraft were built using parts from old spy satellites and rockets. The name "Vostok" means "East" in Russian. It stayed a secret until Yuri Gagarin's flight.

The Vostok programme completed six flights with people from 1961 to 1963. The longest flight lasted almost five days! After Vostok, the Soviet Union started a new programme called Voskhod.

The Vostok programme helped make space travel possible for humans and showed how much scientists and pilots could achieve.
