Rome

Rome is the capital city of Italy. It is one of the most famous cities in the world, often called the "Eternal City." Rome is very old, with a history that spans over 28 centuries.

Rome was the heart of the ancient Roman Kingdom, Roman Republic, and Roman Empire. These powerful civilizations helped shape Western civilization and Christian culture. Today, Rome is a lively city filled with history, art, and culture.

Rome is home to Vatican City, the smallest country in the world. Vatican City is the center of the Catholic Church. The historic center of Rome is a World Heritage Site, attracting many visitors every year. Rome also plays an important role in international organizations and businesses, making it a key place for culture, fashion, and design.

Rome’s name comes from the city’s founder and first king, Romulus. Legends say Romulus started Rome after a special story involving his brother Remus. Some believe the name may be linked to the Tiber River or an ancient Etruscan word. Rome has had many names throughout history, including "Urbs" meaning central city, and "Urbs Aeterna" meaning "The Eternal City."

Rome has a rich history that began thousands of years ago. People lived in the area as far back as 14,000 years ago, leaving behind stone tools and pottery. The city likely started from small villages on hills, especially the Palatine Hill, near where the Roman Forum would later be. Rome grew from these villages into a large, important city.

Rome is located in the Lazio region of central Italy along the Tiber River. The city began on seven hills, including the Palatine Hill and the Capitoline Hill. Today, Rome also includes parts near the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the area of Ostia close to the water. Rome has many parks and gardens, such as the Villa Borghese, giving people places to walk and relax.

Rome is a world fashion capital, known for its beautiful fountains, statues, and old buildings. The city has many famous fountains, including the Trevi Fountain, and important statues where people leave messages. Rome is also famous for its food, with traditional dishes like oxtail, lamb, and artichokes. Popular foods today include saltimbocca, carciofi alla romana, and spaghetti alla carbonara.

Rome is an important place for sports, especially association football. The city hosted World Cup finals in 1934 and 1990. Local teams SS Lazio and AS Roma play in the Derby della Capitale. Rome also hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics and has many teams in basketball, rugby, tennis, and more.

Rome is a big place for travel in Italy. It sits in the middle of many roads that spread out like the spokes of a wheel. Today, a big ring road called the Grande Raccordo Anulare, or GRA, goes around the city. Rome has many ways to travel, including trains, buses, and planes. The main train station, Termini, is very busy. Rome has three airports, with Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino being the largest. The city also has a metro with three lines, and many buses and trams to help people move around.
