Chicopee is a city in the United States, located in Hampden County, Massachusetts, along the Connecticut River. It had a population of 55,560 as of the 2020 census, making it the second-largest city in western Massachusetts after Springfield. The city is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Historically, Chicopee grew around small mill communities along the Chicopee River. In the 19th century, it became an important industrial center. By the early 20th century, it had major factories such as the Fisk Rubber Company and A. G. Spalding's sporting goods.

Today, Chicopee remains a center for specialty manufacturing. It is also home to Westover Air Reserve Base, the largest Air Force Reserve Base in the United States, established in 1940 before World War II. The city is known as the "Crossroads of New England" due to its central location and strong transportation network, with four interstate highways—I-90, I-91, I-291, and I-391—running through it, along with several state routes.

History

The name "Chicopee" comes from the Nipmuc language, possibly meaning "violently" or "of red cedar." The area was first settled in 1636 when William Pynchon bought land from the Agawam Indians. Early settlers built a sawmill at Chicopee Falls in 1678.

In 1848, Chicopee became its own town after separating from Springfield. It grew into an important place for making things, with factories for textiles, tools, and bicycles. By 1890, Chicopee was officially a city, with George Sylvester Taylor as its first mayor.
