Greece at the 2016 Summer Olympics

Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience

Flag of Greece (since 1978) and Naval Ensign of Greece (since 1828)

Greece competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to 21.

Greek athletes have been in every Summer Olympic Games of the modern era, along with countries like Australia, France, Great Britain, and Switzerland. Because Greece started the Olympic Games, its team always goes first in the opening ceremony.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee chose 93 athletes to compete in 15 different sports. This was the smallest Greek team since 1992. The most athletes from Greece were in aquatic sports, with 29 in total—14 in swimming, 2 in synchronized swimming, and 13 in men's water polo. There was only one athlete each in archery, road cycling, track cycling, mountain biking, table tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling.

Some Greek athletes had been in many Olympics before. Archer Evangelia Psarra, aged 42, and long-distance swimmer Spyridon Gianniotis were both going to their fifth Olympics. Five athletes were competing in their fourth Games, such as table tennis player Panagiotis Gionis, gymnast Vlasios Maras, and judo star Ilias Iliadis. Sailor Sofia Bekatorou became Greece's first female flag bearer at the opening ceremony.

Greece won six medals at the 2016 Olympics—three gold, one silver, and two bronze. This was a big improvement from the 2012 Games in London. Anna Korakaki made history as the first Greek athlete to win more than one medal at a single Olympics since 1912, earning gold and bronze in women's pistol shooting. Gymnast Eleftherios Petrounias and pole vaulter Ekaterini Stefanidi each won gold medals. Spyridon Gianniotis earned a silver medal in the open water marathon swim, and Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis won bronze in sailing.
