Venezuela at the 2016 Summer Olympics

Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience

Venezuela competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. This was the eighteenth time Venezuela joined the Summer Olympics. The Venezuelan Olympic Committee sent 87 athletes, with 62 men and 25 women, to compete in twenty sports.

This was Venezuela's second-largest group of athletes ever, just smaller than the team that went to Beijing 2008. The team included basketball players for men, marking Venezuela's return to Olympic basketball after many years. Venezuela also tried new sports for 2016, like golf and women's beach volleyball. They also returned to sports they had not done for eight years, like equestrian, rowing, and taekwondo.

Some well-known athletes from Venezuela were fencers Silvio Fernández and Alejandra Benítez, swimmer Albert Subirats, gymnast Jessica López, boxer Gabriel Maestre, BMX rider Stefany Hernández, and fencing brothers Francisco and Rubén Limardo. Rubén Limardo was chosen by fans to carry Venezuela's flag at the opening ceremony.

Venezuela did not win any gold medals, but the team came home with three medals: one silver and two bronze. The silver medal went to triple jumper Yulimar Rojas, and the bronze medals went to Hernández and boxer Yoel Finol. Later, Finol moved up from bronze to silver when another boxer could not keep their medal.
