The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) are the military forces of Nigeria. They have three main parts: the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, and Nigerian Air Force. The President of Nigeria is the top leader of the armed forces. They work through the Ministry of Defence. The main person in charge of the day-to-day work is the Chief of Defence Staff, who reports to the Nigerian Defence Minister. The Nigerian military is one of the biggest in Africa.

The Nigerian Armed Forces began in 1960, taking over from units that were in the country during Nigeria's time as a protectorate. Since then, the military has been part of many important events. It sent peacekeepers to help other countries, working with the United Nations and groups like the Economic Community of West African States. The military has also taken control of the country twice. Over the years, Nigeria's armed forces have helped in battles across Africa.

Legal standing

The Nigerian Armed Forces have important jobs that are protected by Nigeria's constitution. They protect the country from attacks, keep its borders safe, and help keep peace when needed. The constitution says Nigeria's armed forces include an army, a navy, and an air force, and any other branches that laws may add later. The forces are organized to show the federal nature of Nigeria.

History

The Nigerian Armed Forces started as part of the Royal West African Frontier Force before Nigeria became independent in 1960. In 1956, the Nigeria Regiment was renamed the Nigerian Military Forces. By 1958, Nigeria took control of these forces from British authorities.

During the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, the military grew quickly to fight the breakaway state of Biafra. After the war, the size of the military was reduced. Nigeria has continued to work on modernizing its military to better protect the country and the region.
