The United States joined the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

346 athletes from the United States took part. There were 267 men and 79 women. They competed in 159 events in 19 sports, trying to win medals. It was a special time when athletes from many countries came together for the Olympic Games.

Boxing

Joe Frazier won the United States' only gold medal in boxing at the 1964 Olympics. He was only 20 years old and had taken the place of another boxer at the last minute. Even with an injured thumb, he defeated older and more experienced opponents to win the Olympic title.
