List of European countries by area

Adapted from Wikipedia Β· Discoverer experience

This list shows European countries and their areas in square kilometres. Europe is a big continent with a total area of about 10 million square kilometres. Some countries are partly in Europe and partly in other places, so we only count the part that is in Europe. When we talk about the size of a country, we also include any lakes or rivers inside it.

Relative sizes

European countries come in many different sizes. The largest is Russia, which covers almost 4,000,000 km2. The smallest is Vatican City, which is less than 1 km2.

Definition

Europe and Asia are connected, so it can be hard to know exactly where Europe ends and Asia begins. Often, the line between them is drawn based on history, politics, and culture, rather than just natural geography.

A map of Europe shows one way to decide its borders.

Blue = Contiguous transcontinental countries
Green = Sometimes considered European due to culture, politics, economy and history, but geographically outside Europe's boundaries
