A realm is a community or territory ruled by a sovereign leader. This word is often used to talk about countries led by kings, queens, or other rulers. In some big empires, a realm can also be a smaller part that has its own special ruler. For example, in the German Empire, there were many different realms, each with its own monarch. The idea of a realm helps us understand how some places were governed long ago and how power was shared or divided.

Etymology

The word "realm" comes from an old French word called reaume, which later became royaume in modern French. It started being used in English around the 17th century. The word comes from a Latin word regalimen, related to regalis, meaning something belonging to a king (rex). The Latin verb regere means 'to rule'. So, a realm is literally the area ruled by a leader, like a king or emperor.

Usage

A realm is a community or area ruled by a leader, often a king or queen. The word "realm" is especially used for countries whose names include the word "kingdom," like the United Kingdom. It helps avoid repeating words in sentences, such as saying "The King's realm, the United Kingdom..."

The term can also describe countries where the ruler is not called a king or queen. For example, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a realm even though its leader is called a Grand Duke, not a King. Some realms share the same ruler but are separate countries, like the Commonwealth realms.

The United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves with all its colonies. Example of a kingdom out of an empire. (Extinct country that had a royal throne)

Sometimes, a realm can include areas that are ruled by a monarch but are not physically part of their kingdom. The Cook Islands and Niue are part of the Realm of New Zealand, but they are not part of New Zealand itself.

We also use "realm" in a different way to talk about areas of knowledge or places where someone is very skilled. For example, we might say, "Shakespeare's realm was English drama," meaning he was very famous for that. Or, "A lion's realm is the jungle," meaning that is where lions live and are in charge.
