The American Football Conference
The American Football Conference, or AFC, is one of the two big groups in the National Football League. The NFL is the top place where American football teams play in the United States. The AFC has 16 teams, just like the other group, the National Football Conference.
Teams in the AFC
The AFC teams are split into four parts, called divisions. These divisions are: East, North, South, and West. Each division has four teams. Some famous teams in the AFC are the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs.
Here are the teams in each division:
- East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
- North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
- South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
- West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers
Why People Know About the AFC
The AFC started in 1970 when the NFL joined with another league called the American Football League. Ten teams from that old league and three from the NFL became the AFC. Since then, new teams have joined, and some teams have moved to new cities.
Each year, the best teams from the AFC play in the AFC playoffs. The winner gets to play in the big Super Bowl against the best team from the NFC. The New England Patriots have won the most AFC titles, and the Kansas City Chiefs were the last AFC team to win the Super Bowl.
The AFC has a president, but this job is mostly for special events, like giving out trophies.
The AFC is an important part of American football, and many fans follow their favorite teams closely.
