The Beautiful California Coast Ranges

The California Coast Ranges are a wonderful group of mountains along the coast of California. They stretch for about 400 miles from Humboldt County, California down to Santa Barbara County. These mountains are part of a bigger area called the Pacific Border province, which is itself part of the Pacific Mountain System.

These mountains are full of nature and plants. In 1983, UNESCO chose a part of them as the "California Coast Ranges Biosphere Reserve". This helps keep the nature safe and shows how people can live kindly with the environment. The reserve is part of the Man and the Biosphere Programme of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

The California Coast Ranges have many smaller mountain areas. Some of these are the Berkeley Hills, Diablo Range, Santa Cruz Mountains, Gabilan Range, Santa Lucia Range, Sierra de Salinas, Temblor Range, and Sierra Madre. There are also the Northern Coast Ranges and Southern Coast Ranges.

The mountains are home to many plants and animals. You can find tall Coast redwood trees and many kinds of oak trees. Animals like Black-tailed deer and different kinds of salmon live here too. The different areas of these mountains have many special plants that make them beautiful and interesting.
