Camarasaurus
Camarasaurus was a very big dinosaur that lived a long, long time ago in North America. It was a type of sauropod, which means it had a long neck and tail, and four strong legs.
Camarasaurus lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 155 to 145 million years ago. People first found its fossils in Colorado in 1877. A scientist named Edward Drinker Cope gave it its name, which means "chambered lizard" because of special spaces in its neck bones.
There are four kinds, or species, of Camarasaurus. The biggest one, called C. supremus, could be as long as a football field! It had strong jaws and special teeth for eating plants. Camarasaurus lived at the same time as other famous dinosaurs like Stegosaurus and Allosaurus.
Scientists have found more than 500 fossils of Camarasaurus, so it is one of the best-known dinosaurs. Some fossils show that Camarasaurus could live to be about 40 years old, which is very old for a dinosaur. It probably ate plants from trees and bushes.
Camarasaurus had a body like an elephant, with a long neck and a big body. Its neck and tail were shorter than some other dinosaurs, and its skull was larger. Because its front legs were longer, it stood a little taller at the shoulders than at the hips.
People found the first Camarasaurus fossils in Garden Park, Colorado. A scientist in Philadelphia studied them and named this new dinosaur. Later, more fossils were found in places like Wyoming, South Dakota, and New Mexico. Today, we can see models of Camarasaurus in many museums.
