The Chinese Civil War

The Chinese Civil War was a long time when two groups in China tried to decide who would lead the country. One group was called the Kuomintang, and the other was the Chinese Communist Party. They wanted to control mainland China and make big changes for the people.

China had many leaders after the old Qing dynasty ended. Sun Yat-sen tried to bring the country together, but after he passed away, groups began arguing over how to lead. This led to the two big groups forming and disagreeing on many things.

For a short time, the two groups worked together during something called the First United Front. They fought against local leaders in central China during the Northern Expedition. But soon after, they started fighting each other. Later, they stopped fighting each other to work together against the Japanese invasion of China, with help from the Allies of World War II.

After Japan was defeated, the two groups started fighting again. This time, the Chinese Communist Party did very well. From 1945 to 1949, they took control of mainland China and proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949. The leaders of the other side had to go to the island of Taiwan. Since then, there has been a stand-off between the two sides, with both saying they are the real government of all China.
