Estuary English

Adapted from Wikipedia · Explorer experience

Estuary English is a fun and special way of speaking English. It came from places near the River Thames, close to London. It started in the late 1900s.

This way of talking mixes two different sounds. One is a posh way of speaking called Received Pronunciation. The other is a local London sound called Cockney. People who speak Estuary English sound like they are in between these two.

You can hear Estuary English from famous people living in Essex, Kent, and Berkshire. It shows how language can change and mix where lots of people live and talk together.

Some experts think Estuary English is becoming a new standard way to speak in England. It is called “intermediate,” meaning it is not super posh but also not a very strong local accent. This way of speaking is interesting because it shows how people’s voices can blend together.
