James Naismith

James Naismith was a wonderful teacher and coach from Canada. He is best known for inventing the game of basketball. He created basketball in 1891 when he was looking for a fun indoor game for his students to play during winter.

Naismith was born on November 6, 1861, in Almonte, Canada West. His parents were from Scotland. As a child, he enjoyed playing games like catch and hide-and-seek. After his parents passed away, he lived with his aunt and uncle and went to school in Almonte.

He studied physical education at McGill University in Montreal. Later, he moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he invented basketball. He used peach baskets as goals and a soccer ball for the game. His first rules helped keep the game fair and safe. The first game had nine players on each side.

Naismith also worked at the University of Kansas, where he started the basketball program in 1898. He taught many future coaches, including Phog Allen. Basketball grew very popular and became an Olympic sport. Naismith lived to see basketball become a big part of the world.

Today, basketball is played by millions of people around the globe. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, honors him and his amazing invention.
