Pétanque
Pétanque is a fun and easy game where people throw small balls to get them close to a little target ball. It is part of a group of games called boules. Other games in this group are bocce, boule lyonnaise, and lawn bowls.
People play pétanque on hard dirt or gravel. It can be played in parks or special places called boulodromes. Players stand inside a small circle when they throw their balls. The goal is to get your balls closer to the target ball than the other team’s balls.
The modern game of pétanque started in La Ciotat, in the Provence area of France, around 1910. It was created by a man named Jules Lenoir and his friend Ernest Pitiot. They made a new way to play where everyone stands still in a circle. This is why the game is called pétanque, which means “feet planted” in the local language.
Pétanque is very popular in France and many other places. It is played in many countries, especially in Southeast Asia, like Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. There are big groups of players in Germany, Spain, and England. Even in the United States, about 30,000 people enjoy playing pétanque.
People love pétanque because it is easy to learn and fun to play. You only need a few small balls and a target ball. The game can be played by anyone, and it is enjoyed by people of all ages.
