Pope Urban II

Pope Urban II was the leader of the Catholic Church from 1088 until he passed away in 1099. He was born around 1035 in France, in a place called Châtillon-sur-Marne.

One big moment in his time as pope was a meeting in 1095 called the Council of Clermont. At this meeting, he asked Christians to help the Holy Land and support Eastern churches. Many people listened and decided to join this journey, which became known as the First Crusade.

Urban II worked hard to support church rules and travel to talk about important matters. He also created a special group called the Roman Curia to help manage the church. Even though he faced many challenges, he is remembered for his work and help to many people.

Pope Urban II was recognized as a holy person in 1881, and his special day is celebrated on July 29.
