Reindeer
Reindeer, also called caribou, are special kinds of deer that live in very cold places around the world. You can find them in Norway, Finland, Russia, Mongolia, and parts of North America, like Canada and Alaska. They are the only type of deer that live in such chilly areas!
Reindeer are famous because they can grow antlers, and sometimes even the girls grow them, unlike most deer. These antlers help them show off and play during mating time. Reindeer have thick fur to stay warm in snow and cold weather. Their fur changes color too—whiter in very cold places and darker where it’s a bit warmer.
In stories like Christmas, reindeer are known for pulling Santa Claus’s sleigh to deliver gifts to children. This fun idea comes from a poem called A Visit from St. Nicholas written in 1823.
Reindeer have been very important to people who live in cold places. For thousands of years, Arctic people have used reindeer for food, clothing, and even to make shelters. Today, some people still raise reindeer and use them to pull sleds, especially in places like Sápmi.
Reindeer come in many different sizes and colors. Some are very small, like the Svalbard reindeer, and others are much bigger. They can run super fast—even when they are just one day old! Some reindeer travel very long distances, up to 5,000 km, while others stay in the same area all year.
These amazing animals have special hooves that change with the seasons. In summer, their hooves are soft for wet ground, and in winter, they become hard and sharp for walking on snow and ice. This helps them move easily and even dig through snow to find food like a special plant called lichen.
Reindeer live in places called tundra and taiga, which are cold and full of forests. Their numbers have gone down in many places because of changes in the climate and human activities, but many groups work hard to help them survive.
Reindeer are loved around the world, and they even appear on coins and in symbols for many places. For example, Canada’s 25-cent coin, or quarter, has a caribou on it!
