Southern Italy

Southern Italy is the warm, sunny part of Italy. It is like the bottom of a boot! This area has many beautiful places and interesting history. People often call it "Meridione" or "Mezzogiorno".

Southern Italy has several regions. These include Abruzzo, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, and Sicily. Sometimes, the island of Sardinia is also included.

The word "Mezzogiorno" means "midday" or "noon". This is because the sunlight is very strong in the south at midday. The name became popular after the old Kingdom of the Two Sicilies joined with the Kingdom of Sardinia to become part of Italy in 1861.

Southern Italy is known for its beautiful landscapes. There are tall mountains, sunny beaches, and old cities full of history. Many people visit places like the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. The area has a special way of life that many enjoy learning about.

The people of Southern Italy have a rich culture. They love music, dancing, and good food. One famous food from this area is pizza, which started in Naples. The tarantella is a happy dance that people still enjoy today.

Southern Italy has many places to explore. From the busy cities to the quiet countryside, there is something for everyone to discover. The warm weather and friendly people make it a special place to visit or learn about.
