St. Peter's Basilica
St. Peter's Basilica is a very special church in Vatican City, a tiny country inside Rome, Italy. It is one of the most famous churches in the whole world! People have been building and improving this amazing place for many years, starting in the year 1506 and finishing in 1626.
Many talented artists helped make St. Peter's Basilica beautiful. Famous names like Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, and Carlo Maderno all worked on it. The church is very big inside and has a huge round dome you can see from far away.
Inside the church, you can find wonderful art and important holy items. One famous piece is Michelangelo's Pietà, a statue that many people love to see. St. Peter's Basilica is very important for the Catholic Church. Many important church leaders, called popes, are buried here because people believe it is where Saint Peter, one of Jesus’s closest followers, is buried.
People from all over the world visit St. Peter's Basilica to see its art, architecture, and to join special services led by the pope, the leader of the Catholic Church. The church has a big open space called St. Peter's Square in front of it, with tall rows of columns and an ancient Egyptian obelisk in the middle.
