Welcome to Svalbard!

Svalbard is a special group of islands in the Arctic Ocean. It is halfway between Norway and the North Pole. The biggest island is called Spitsbergen, but there are many others like Nordaustlandet, Edgeøya, and Barentsøya. The largest town is Longyearbyen, where most people live.

Long ago, people came to Svalbard to hunt walrus and whales. Later, they mined coal. Today, many people visit as tourists, and scientists come to study the Arctic. You can see beautiful glaciers, tall mountains, and deep fjords. The Gulf Stream makes the climate a little warmer than other places so far north.

Svalbard is home to wonderful animals like polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes, and many birds. Much of the land is protected to keep these animals safe. Norway controls Svalbard, and it has special rules that are different from other parts of the country.
