Historical map showing the extent of the Umayyad Caliphate in 750 CE.

The Umayyad Caliphate was a big and important group of leaders a long time ago. It started in the year 661 after the time of Muhammad. The leaders came from a family called the Umayyad dynasty.

The first leader was Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan. He made Damascus the capital city. From there, the Umayyads grew their lands into many places. They went to the Maghreb, Transoxiana, Sindh, and even Hispania. At its biggest, the Umayyad Caliphate was one of the largest empires in history.

People from different backgrounds lived in these lands. Christians and Jews could practice their religions if they paid a special tax. This helped the Umayyads manage such a big area.

The Umayyads are also known for beautiful Islamic art and buildings. One famous building is the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. It shows how they mixed styles from different cultures.

The Umayyad Caliphate lasted until the year 750 when another group, the Abbasids, took over. But the Umayyads left a lasting mark on history.
