Chad has important relationships with other countries. This is partly because of its oil resources and support for its former president, Idriss Déby.

Even though Chad is officially non-aligned, it keeps close ties with France, the country that once ruled it.

Chad’s relationships with its neighbors, Libya and Sudan, change from time to time. There have been conflicts between Chad and Sudan, with each side supporting different groups.

Besides Libya and Sudan, Chad usually gets along well with the other countries around it. These relationships help Chad get support and investment for its oil industry and other important matters.

Diplomatic relations

Chad has diplomatic ties with many countries around the world. These relationships help Chad get support and resources, especially for its oil industry. The country works closely with France, its former colonial power, and its relationships with nearby countries like Libya and Sudan change from time to time.

Bilateral relations

Africa

Chad works with its neighbors to help each other. This includes groups like the Central African Economic and Customs Union and projects for Lake Chad and the Niger River Basin. Work continues to fix border lines around Lake Chad to avoid fights between countries like Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria.

Americas

Asia

Chad has old ties with Arab countries but had few close links in the 1980s. In 1972, Chad stopped relations with Israel. Later, in 2019, Chad and Israel started talking again and opened an embassy in Israel in 2023. In the 1980s, some Arab countries supported Libya in a fight over land called the Aouzou Strip, while others wanted peace. Algeria helped end this fight.

Europe

Chad is not officially linked to any group but has strong ties with France, its former ruler, which keeps troops in the capital, N'Djamena. Chad gets help from Europe, the United States, and other groups. Recently, there was a problem with the World Bank about how to use money from Chad's oil, but this has been fixed.
