The Book of Genesis
The Book of Genesis is the very first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. Its name means "Origin" because it tells the beginning of everything. It starts with the special words "In the Beginning."
Genesis is part of the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. Some people believe Moses wrote these books. Others think they were written later, after the Babylonian captivity.
The book has two main parts. The first part is called the primeval history. It tells how God made the world and created a lovely garden for Adam and Eve. It also tells how God saved a kind man named Noah and his family.
The second part follows the family of Abraham. Abraham traveled from a place called Ur of the Chaldeans to the land of Canaan. His son Isaac and grandson Jacob continued this journey. Jacob’s name changed to "Israel", and through his son Joseph, their family grew and moved to Egypt. Genesis ends with the family of Israel living in Egypt.
The name Genesis comes from the Latin Vulgate. The word comes from the Greek language. In Hebrew, the book is named after its first word, which means 'In [the] beginning'.
People learn many important lessons from Genesis. It shows how God cares for special families and keeps promises. The stories help us understand about beginnings and families.
