The Near East

The Near East is a special place around the Eastern Mediterranean. It is made up of many lands close to each other. Some of the places here are the Fertile Crescent, the Levant, Anatolia, Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Arabian Peninsula, and sometimes the Balkans. People began using this name in the 1800s for the lands nearest to Europe in the old Ottoman Empire.

Today, the Near East and the Middle East often talk about the same countries. These places include the Arabian Peninsula, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian territories, Syria, and Turkey. Some groups may add Afghanistan to this list too.

The Near East is very important in history. Many old stories and big ideas started here. It is a place where many cultures meet and share. The lands of the Near East are also rich with history, full of amazing stories from long ago.

The Near East is a beautiful mix of many lands and people. It has deserts, mountains, and sea coasts. This area has been a home to many for thousands of years. It is a special place that helps us learn about our past.
